Mukta Das build in the Calcutta tradition, with thinner heads than Bombay or Delhi instruments. The drum speaks without being struck hard and gives the sweet, bell-like tone many soloists prefer.
Their student sets are genuinely playable instruments rather than stripped down versions, which is not true everywhere.
Care and climate
Skins move with humidity within hours, so a set sounds different in summer and winter. Retune rather than assuming a fault.
Slacken the tuning for storage, and keep drums away from direct heat, which is what splits a head.
