Choosing yours

Four reeds is a concert specification. The instrument projects enough to fill a hall on its own, which is why these turn up in performance rather than practice.

They are heavy and they cost more, and for accompaniment or home practice a two or three reed instrument is the more sensible purchase. Buy four reeds because you perform, not because more sounds better.

Most four reed instruments in this range are scale changers, which suits the accompanying work they tend to be used for.

Tuning and setup

Tuned to A440 with all four reed sets voiced individually, then checked again at dispatch. With this many reeds, one slightly out of true is audible immediately, so the check matters more here than anywhere.

Questions we get asked

Who needs a four reed harmonium?

Performers playing without amplification. For practice, accompaniment or kirtan, a two or three reed instrument is lighter, cheaper and entirely sufficient.

How heavy are they?

Considerably heavier than a three reed. Exact weights are on each product page, and worth checking if the instrument will be carried.

Are they harder to maintain?

Not harder, but there is more to keep in tune. The interval between professional retunings is similar, around three to five years with regular use.
