Delhi style heads are on the thicker side, which makes them durable and gives an earthier tone. The dayan is moderately wide and balanced, which is why Delhi sets are the usual recommendation for a first serious instrument.
If you study in the Delhi tradition, this is the sound your teacher will expect. If you are unattached to a gharana, the choice is simply whether you prefer crispness or depth.
Bayan weight and metal still apply on top of the style: brass for a brighter attack, copper for a warmer and deeper bass.
Skins move with humidity within hours, so the same set sounds different in summer and winter. Retune rather than assuming something is wrong.
Slacken the tuning if the set is stored for more than a few weeks, and keep it out of direct heat and sun.

Tap the dowels down to raise pitch, up to lower it, then fine tune at the braided rim with the hammer. Work around the drum evenly, not at one point.
