Choosing yours

A dayan on its own is bought for three reasons: to replace a cracked or worn drum from an existing set, to keep a second dayan tuned to a different pitch, or for practice where carrying a full set is impractical.

If you are replacing part of a set, match the wood and roughly the size of the drum you already have, so the pair looks and behaves consistently.

Sheesham is the standard wood: dense, bright and good at holding pitch. Mahogany is a little warmer.

Tuning and setup

Skinned, syahi applied and tuned before dispatch. Tap the dowels down to raise the pitch and up to lower it, then fine tune at the rim with the hammer, working evenly around the drum.

Questions we get asked

Why buy a dayan alone?

To replace a damaged drum from a set, to keep a second dayan at a different pitch, or for practice where a full set is impractical.

Will it match my existing bayan?

Match the wood and approximate size to what you have. The listing gives both, and we can advise if you tell us what you own.

What pitch does it come tuned to?

We tune before dispatch, but you will retune to whatever key you are playing in. Tabla pitch is set by the music, not fixed at the factory.
