Tabla sets from the Akbar Mian workshop of Hyderabad, a name with a long history in Indian tabla making.
Akbar Mian is a tabla-making name from Hyderabad, also spelled Akber Miya. Its influence runs wide: Ustad Qasim Khan Niyazi, the Delhi maker later honoured by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, learned his craft from Ustad Akbar Mian Hyderabadi.
Standard set, 3 kg brass bayan, $1,185. Sheesham dayan.
Standard set, 4 kg copper bayan, $1,285. Sheesham dayan.
Brass gives a brighter bass with more attack, and cuts through an ensemble. Copper is warmer and deeper, and is the usual professional choice. A heavier bayan gives a fuller bass; a lighter one is easier to carry and quicker to respond.
Tabla can drift out of tune in storage and in transit. Before yours ships we check it and bring it back to the pitch the maker set. We never change the tuning they intended.
The same name, spelled two ways. You will see both.
Copper if you want warmth and depth, brass if you want brightness and attack. Both sets here use a sheesham dayan.
