Choosing yours

These are the drums alone, for players who already have a hammer, cushions and a bag, or who want to choose those separately.

The bayan metal decides the bass: brass is brighter with more attack, copper warmer and deeper and the usual professional choice. Weight follows, and most players settle between 3 and 3.5 kg.

Dayan wood is almost always sheesham. Denser wood holds pitch better and rings longer.

Tuning and setup

We fit the skins, apply the syahi and tune every set before it ships, then check it again on the day it goes. A tabla that has never been tuned will not hold pitch.

A new set needs retuning several times in its first weeks as the straps settle. Tap the dowels down to raise pitch, up to lower it, working around the drum rather than at one point.

Questions we get asked

What is included in a tabla set only?

The dayan and bayan. No hammer, cushions or bag, which is why these are priced lower than a complete set.

Brass or copper bayan?

Copper is warmer and deeper, with bends that feel smooth under the hand. Brass is brighter with more attack. If you carry the set often, brass is the practical choice.

Will I need a hammer?

Yes, for tuning. If you do not already have one, a complete set including the hammer and cushions is usually better value.
