A folding harmonium collapses to roughly half its playing depth. The keyboard and bellows fold into the body and the whole thing latches shut into a case shape. It does not weigh less than an upright with the same reeds, it just packs smaller. That distinction matters if you are choosing for the airport rather than the car.
Flying with it. The smallest folding models are the ones that go in overhead lockers without argument. Our Portable Kirtan Flight Model at $549 is built for exactly this. The Bina No. 23B at $749 is the same idea. Both are 2 reed and both fit a carry on bag. Anything with 3 reeds or a scale changer is checked luggage.
Driving between venues. Size matters less, sound matters more. The Maharaja Safri at $649 to $699 and the Bina 17 series at $779 to $865 are 9 stop instruments with couplers that fold. Fuller sound than the small ones, still folds.
Touring and performing. Monoj K Sardar builds concert folding instruments in teak. 2 reed from $849, 3 reed from $1,249, and 4 reed at $2,249. These are serious instruments that happen to fold, not travel compromises.
Scale changer that folds. MKS makes one at $1,239 for 2 reed and $1,599 for 3 reed. Our own Premium Calcutta folds and shifts, $1,439 for 3 reed and $1,679 for 4 reed. Paul & Co at $2,899. All are checked luggage and all need a hard case.
Every instrument we ship is insured for its full value, free, so damage in transit to you is covered. Once it is yours, the risk is the airline. A small folding model in a padded bag in the cabin is fine. Anything checked wants a hard case, and it is worth telling us at order time so we can advise on the right one. The 549 Flight Model was designed by us for cabin baggage because customers kept asking.
Folding instruments are more complex than uprights. The hinges and latches are extra parts that can loosen over years of use. A well made folding harmonium holds up fine, but for the same reed configuration an upright is a little more rigid and costs a little less. If the instrument will not actually travel, buy the upright.
