Most harmonium advice is a list of specifications. Reed count, stop count, key count, coupler, scale changer. Almost none of it tells you what separates a harmonium you will still be playing in fifteen years from one that disappoints you in six months.
This guide is written the other way round. It starts with the two decisions that set your budget, then explains every part of the instrument so the specifications finally mean something, then gives you the five checks that actually matter.
We build harmoniums by hand in our Delhi workshop and ship them worldwide, so we are not neutral. We have still written this so it works for you even if you buy elsewhere.

Start here: the two decisions that matter most
Everything else in this guide is detail. These two decisions set your budget and narrow the field to a handful of instruments.
Decision one: do you need a scale changer?
A scale changer lets you slide the whole keyboard sideways in half steps, so you can play the same familiar fingering in a different key. It is the harmonium equivalent of a capo on a guitar.
A harmonium with a scale changer typically costs around double the equivalent harmonium without one. That is the largest price fork in the category.
Ask yourself one question: will I be playing with other people?
Yes, with other musicians or a group of singers. Get a scale changer. The situation it solves comes up constantly. A singer says the song sits too high. A guitarist knows it in A and you play it in G. Somebody wants to start the kirtan a tone lower because the room is tired. With a scale changer you slide the keyboard and carry on playing exactly what your hands already know. Without one you need the experience to transpose on the spot, which takes years.
No, or not yet. Skip it. You will get a considerably better instrument for the money, because every rupee goes into wood, reeds and tuning rather than into a complicated mechanism.
If you are a beginner and unsure, buy a standard harmonium. Learn on it for a couple of years. By the time a scale changer would genuinely help you, you will know it. A scale changer has a lot of moving parts, and a badly built one is worse than none at all.
Decision two: will it travel?
One piece, also called standard or stand up. The body is fixed. Nothing folds. It is the better instrument, all else being equal, because there are fewer joins for air to escape through. Better air tightness means better sustain, a more immediate response to the pumping hand, and easier dynamics.
Folding, also called portable, suitcase or kirtan style. The top folds down and it closes into its own case with a carry handle. Straightforward to travel with, survives being moved around, goes in a car boot without thought.
The trade is real and everybody in the trade knows it. A folding harmonium has more joins, so it tends to lose a little more air than an equivalent one piece model, which means slightly shorter sustain.
Buy one piece if the harmonium will mostly live in one room. This is most people.
Buy folding if you take it to classes, satsangs, kirtans or gigs, or you fly with it. A well made folding harmonium is a fine instrument. Just do not buy one for portability you will not use.
What actually makes a harmonium good
This is the part most guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether you are happy with the instrument.
Sound is the specification
A harmonium can have every feature on the list and sound thin and lifeless. A harmonium with fewer features, built carefully, can sound wonderful.
The things that produce a good sound are not printed on a spec sheet. They are the quality of the wood and whether it was properly seasoned, and the number of hours a craftsman spent voicing and tuning each reed by hand.
Two harmoniums can leave a workshop with the same reeds, the same stops, the same bellows and the same wood, and sound completely different, because one had many hours of a skilled person's attention and the other had a few minutes. That labour is most of what you pay for in a good harmonium, and it is invisible in a product listing.
Judge an instrument by what it does, not by what it has.
Air is the engine
A harmonium is a wind instrument. Everything it does depends on holding air.
A harmonium that holds air responds to your hand immediately, sustains after you stop pumping, plays quietly when you want it quiet, and lets you place accents where you want them. A harmonium that leaks feels sluggish and vague. You pump and the sound arrives slightly late, and it is difficult to play evenly.
There is a simple test for this, and it is the most useful thing in this guide. It is check one in Part 7.
Seasoned wood
Harmonium bodies are traditionally built from teak, sagwan in Hindi. Teak is stable, resists warping, and handles changes in humidity, which matters enormously in an instrument that gets shipped between climates.
Seasoning is the part nobody sees. Wood that has not been dried properly before it is worked will move after the instrument is built. Joins open, air escapes, tuning shifts. It can be a beautiful looking instrument and still do this.
You cannot see seasoning in a photograph, which is exactly why it is where corners get cut.
How a harmonium works, in plain language
Follow the air. That is the whole instrument.
1. The external bellows. The flap at the back that you pump. Pull it open and a leather valve at the back opens and lets air in. Push it closed and that valve shuts, forcing the air forward through a second valve.
2. The internal bellows. The air arrives in a second, internal bellows under spring pressure. This is the reservoir, and it is why a harmonium sounds smooth rather than in gusts. Your pumping is uneven. The internal bellows evens it out.
3. The stops. The internal springs push air towards the reed chambers, but only through the routes you have opened. The stop knobs open and close those routes. A closed stop means the air cannot reach that bank of reeds.
4. The chambers and reed banks. Inside, the reeds are grouped into banks, and each bank sits in its own air chamber. Most harmoniums have two or three banks. Some have four. Each bank is a different voice, and you combine them with the stops.
5. The keys. Pressing a key opens a small hole at the back of that key, letting the pressurised air escape through one particular reed.
6. The reed sounds. Air rushing past the reed's tongue sets it vibrating, and that vibration is the note.
What a reed actually is
A harmonium reed is two pieces. An outer plate, usually brass, screwed to the sound board, with a slot cut through it. And a tongue, usually brass or copper, riveted to the plate at one end and sitting free in the slot at the other, with a tiny gap all round.
Air forced through the slot sets the tongue vibrating. The length and thickness of the tongue set the pitch. Tuning a reed means adjusting the tongue by hand, a very small amount at a time, and that is skilled and slow work.
Two key actions: Delhi and Calcutta
The keyboard is built in two different ways, and this is one of the real dividing lines in the harmonium world.
Delhi style keys are one piece. The key pivots on a centre pin. Press the front down, the back lifts, the air escapes, the reed sounds. Simple and direct.
Calcutta style keys are two pieces. Press the front piece down, a tab at the back of it catches a tab on the front of a separate rear piece and lifts that instead. A more involved mechanism, and a different feel under the fingers.
Neither is better. If you are buying your first harmonium this is not a decision to agonise over. Buy the one that sounds right.
Stops, drones, couplers and scale changers
These four words cause more confusion than everything else combined.
Stops
The large knobs. Each one opens an air route to a bank of reeds.
A typical harmonium has a treble bank, sometimes called male reeds, and a bass bank tuned an octave lower. You will often find two stops for each bank rather than one. That is not a mistake. One opens a small hole and one opens a larger opening into the same chamber, so one gives you the voice and the other gives you the voice with a noticeable boost in volume and body. Open both for the fullest version of that bank.
Combining banks is how you voice the instrument. Treble alone is bright and light. Bass alone is dark. Both together is the full, familiar harmonium sound.
The tremolo stop. Some harmoniums have one. It puts a small flap in the air path which bobs up and down as air passes, producing a warbling, pulsing tone. Players tend to either love it or never touch it.
One thing surprises people. It only works when it is the only stop open. Open anything else and the tremolo goes silent, because air always takes the easiest route out, and the tremolo flap is a harder route than an open chamber. Nothing is broken. That is simply how the air behaves.
Drones
The small knobs. These are not stops. Each one is fixed to a single note, and pulling it out makes that note sound continuously underneath whatever you play, without holding a key down.
They do the job a tanpura or a shruti box does: give the music a fixed tonal centre to sit on. Harmoniums came into a musical tradition that expects a drone, so makers built one in. Drone notes are set at the workshop, and a maker can set them differently on request.
Two things to know. A drone will not sound unless a main stop is open for the chamber it sits in, so if your drones seem dead, check your stops before you conclude anything is wrong. And the drones usually sound a little more muffled than the keys, because the air reaches them by a different route inside the instrument. That is normal, and arguably an advantage, since a drone should sit under the music rather than on top of it.
There is also an old trick worth knowing. Slide something under a key to hold it down and you have made your own drone on any note you like, and the harmonium behaves very much like a shruti box.
Couplers
A coupler links each key to the same note an octave away, so pressing one key sounds two reeds at once. The result is a fuller, thicker, more chorus like sound.
Delhi couplers are made from a series of wires and typically couple to the right, giving the octave above. Calcutta couplers are made from wooden bars and typically couple to the left, giving the octave below.
The case against a coupler, which is worth hearing. A coupler ties two reeds together, so both have to stay perfectly in tune with each other. If either drifts even slightly, everything you play sounds wrong, and holding that over years is difficult. The wire type can also rattle. And a coupler adds cost, which on a modestly priced instrument means the money came out of something else, usually the hours spent voicing the reeds.
There is a reason many makers now leave couplers off standard harmoniums entirely. On a good double reed instrument the bass and treble reeds already combine into a full, balanced sound through the stops, and the coupler adds less than it costs. Couplers earn their place most clearly on scale changer instruments, where the mechanism and the price point both support them.
Do not treat a coupler as a mark of quality, and do not choose one harmonium over another because it has one.
Scale changers
A scale changer slides the entire keyboard along in half steps, so a shape your hands already know produces a different key.
A thirteen scale instrument gives you thirteen positions, covering a full octave of starting points. Play your familiar C shape in the first position and you get C. Slide the keyboard, play exactly the same shape, and you get whatever key you have moved to.
The mechanism tilts the keys as the keyboard slides, so each key meets the right reed. It is genuinely complicated, and this is where build quality stops being an abstract point. A well built scale changer is smooth, fluid and reliable for decades. A badly built one develops problems, and there are plenty of cheap scale changer harmoniums sold online that fail within months.
A high price does not prove quality. But a low price on a scale changer almost always proves the opposite, because the mechanism is the expensive part. If the mechanism is expensive and the instrument is cheap, something was left out.
Delhi or Calcutta
Two building traditions, both alive, both excellent.

Players who have used both usually have a preference and usually cannot fully explain it, which is a good sign that it is about feel rather than specification.
Do not let this decision hold you up. Choose on sound.

Reeds: what matters and what does not
How many reed banks?
Single reed. Avoid it. The sound is thin and it is hard to play musically. It is cheap for a reason, and it is the most common way a beginner ends up giving up on the instrument.
Double reed. The standard, and the right answer for most buyers. Bass and treble banks combine into a full, balanced sound.
Triple and quadruple reed. More banks means more voicing options and a richer, bigger sound, and it means a heavier and more expensive instrument. Worth it for performers and for players who want the fullest possible tone. Not necessary for learning.
The important caveat: a badly made triple reed harmonium is worse than a well made double reed one. More banks means more reeds that have to stay in tune with each other. If the workmanship is not there, the extra reeds work against you.
The reed brand question
People ask which reeds an instrument has as though the answer settles everything. It does not.
On German reeds. You will see German reeds advertised. They are not being manufactured today. There was a period, long ago, when German reeds were imported and they were very sweet indeed. Anyone offering German reeds now is almost certainly offering reeds salvaged from an old instrument. That can be perfectly genuine. It is simply not what most buyers think they are being offered.
On current reeds. Several well known reed makers supply the trade today, at slightly different prices. The difference between them in the finished instrument is much smaller than most buyers assume.
What actually decides how a reed sounds is how much time a skilled craftsman spent on it. Voicing and tuning a reed properly is slow work. The same reed, fitted by two different workshops, produces two different instruments. Better reeds fitted carelessly lose to cheaper reeds fitted with care, every time.
So the useful question is not only which reeds, but who built the instrument and where.
Number of keys
The number of keys has nothing to do with sound quality.
A smaller harmonium has fewer keys because the body is smaller. It can sound superb. A larger one gives you more range at the top and bottom, which matters only if you actually play up there. Buy the range you need and read nothing else into the number.
Number of stops
Also widely misunderstood. More stops does not mean better.
A stop is an air route. A larger instrument has more internal space, so more routes, so more knobs on the front. That is all it tells you. A seven stop harmonium and a nine stop harmonium can be identical in quality.
The five checks that matter
There are a lot of things you could check on a harmonium. Five of them decide whether you will be happy with it. Everything else is either fixable in ten minutes or has nothing to do with quality.
1. Sustain. The one test worth doing.
Play a chord at normal volume, stop pumping, and count until the sound dies.
- More than four seconds: good.
- Around four: acceptable.
- Under three: mediocre.
- Around two: poor. Walk away.
Do it on a low chord and a high chord. Low notes use more air, so they always die sooner. A harmonium where the low chord runs close to four seconds and the high chord runs to six is excellent. One where the low chord dies at two and the high barely makes three will be hard work to play for as long as you own it.
This single test tells you more than every specification on the listing combined, because it measures air tightness, and air tightness is the instrument.
We record this test on video for every harmonium before it ships. It is the fastest way to show you what you are actually buying.
2. Reeds: double reed minimum, and workmanship over brand
Do not buy a single reed harmonium. Double reed is the floor. Triple and quadruple are upgrades, not necessities, and only in instruments built well enough to hold several banks in tune with each other.
Beyond that, ignore the reed brand debate. Who built the instrument and how long they spent on it matters more than whose reeds went in.
3. Tuning, and what 440 Hz actually means for you
If you will ever play with other people or along to recordings, you want 440 Hz. That is standard concert pitch and it lets everything sit together.
If you play alone, exact concert pitch matters far less. What matters is that the instrument is in tune with itself. You check that by listening to octaves, fifths and chords. If those sound clean, the harmonium is internally in tune and you will never notice the difference.
Tuning should be done before an instrument ships, not after it arrives. That is standard practice with us and it should be standard anywhere.
4. Know which faults are permanent and which are not
This is the check that saves people the most money, and almost nobody explains it.
Permanent, so check before you buy:
- \1 The bellows are made from a reinforced card material and
the glue in the construction can produce a crackling noise as they move. It does not wear off with playing. People have lived with it for fifteen years and more. To hear it, listen to one note played very softly with the bellows opening fully. If it is there, it is obvious.
- \1 Some harmoniums sound clicky or plasticky under the fingers
when played with force. The sound of the instrument should comfortably mask the mechanical noise of the keyboard. If you can hear the keys over the music, that will irritate you for years.
- \1 See check one. It is a build characteristic, not a fault to
be fixed.
Fixable, so do not walk away over these:
- \1 Usually dust or a metal particle in
the reed, or a reed that needs straightening or replacing. Replacing a reed is two screws.
- \1 Usually friction from the wood at
the sides of the key, solved with a little sandpaper, or dust under the felt at the back where the key seals the air hole. This can also appear years later and you can fix it yourself.
The rule is simple. Permanent faults are a reason not to buy. Fixable faults are a reason to have it fixed before dispatch, and nothing to fear afterwards. Both of them will turn up at some point in the life of any harmonium, and Part 11 shows you how to deal with them yourself in a few minutes.
5. Sound over specification
If you take one thing from this page, take this. A harmonium with fewer stops, no coupler and fewer keys, built carefully, will beat a fully specified instrument built quickly, every single time.
Listen to the instrument. The specification table is the last thing to look at, not the first.
Buying a harmonium from another country
Most people reading this are in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, buying an instrument built in India that they cannot put their hands on first. Here is how to make that safe.
Ask for video of the exact instrument, not the model. A stock photo of a model tells you nothing about the unit in the box. A video of the actual harmonium being played, running the sustain test and sounding every key in turn, tells you almost everything. We record this and send it on WhatsApp before anything ships. Anyone selling a serious instrument internationally should be willing to do the same.
Ask for tuning before dispatch. It should be standard, not an extra.
Ask what happens if something is not right. The answer matters more than any specification on the page.
Ask about customs. Import duty and handling fees vary by country and they are the buyer's responsibility everywhere. A good seller will know roughly what to expect for your country. It is worth checking yourself as well.
Ask how it is packed. A harmonium is wood, reeds and bellows in a box that will be handled by a lot of people. Packing is not a detail.
Ask how it gets to you, and how long it spends getting there
This is the question almost nobody thinks to ask, and it changes the instrument that arrives.
There are two ways a harmonium built in India reaches a home in America, Europe or Australia.
The slow route. Some sellers move stock from India by sea cargo to a warehouse abroad, hold it there, and then send it on by road when somebody orders. The instrument spends weeks in a container, then more time in storage, then more time on a truck.
The direct route. The instrument goes from the workshop to your address by express air freight, with special handling, and arrives in a matter of days.
Why this matters more for a harmonium than for most things you buy online.
A harmonium is wood, glue, reeds and bellows. All four respond to time, temperature and humidity. A shipping container crossing an ocean swings through heat, cold and damp for weeks. A warehouse is a different climate again. A truck is a third. Every one of those transitions is an opportunity for wood to move, for joins to open slightly, and for tuning to drift.
Then there is handling. A sea and road journey means the instrument is lifted, stacked, moved and re-loaded many more times than a direct air shipment, and each one is a chance for something to be knocked.
The tuning you are paying for is the tuning at the bench on the day it was finished. The real question is how much happens to the instrument between that bench and your room.
How we do it. We tune the instrument, pack it for international transit, and send it directly from our workshop by FedEx express with special handling. It reaches most addresses worldwide in about usually three to five days to most addresses, sometimes longer for remote locations or where customs takes extra time. It goes straight from our hands to yours, with nothing in between.
That is the whole reason we do not hold stock abroad. Warehousing overseas would be easier for us. It would not be better for the instrument.
How buying from us works. You place the order without paying anything. We confirm the instrument is available, send you video of that exact harmonium, and only then take payment, by bank transfer or a card link. Nothing leaves your account before you have seen and approved what is coming.
Let it settle on arrival. A harmonium that has travelled from Delhi to a much colder or drier climate should sit in the room for a day or two before you judge it. Wood moves. Give it time.
Myths worth clearing up
"More stops means a better harmonium." No. A stop is an air route. Bigger body, more routes. It says nothing about quality.
"More keys means a better sound." No. It means more range. A small harmonium with fewer keys can sound wonderful.
"It has German reeds, so it must be good." German reeds are not made today. The phrase usually means reeds taken from an old instrument.
"A coupler is a mark of quality." No. It is a feature with real trade offs, and many good makers now leave it off standard instruments on purpose.
"The expensive one must be the best." Not automatically. Price can reflect brand, a decorated finish, or simply what the market will pay. Very cheap scale changers are the opposite trap, and they are a well known one.
"I should buy the one with the most features." Buy the one that sounds best and holds air best within your budget. Features are what is left over after that.
"I should really try it in person first." In an ideal world, yes. In practice almost nobody outside India has a shop with a serious range within reach, and the choice is not between a shop and buying online. It is between buying online well and buying online badly. Video of the actual instrument, tuning before dispatch, and a seller who answers questions properly closes most of that gap.
Which harmonium should I buy?
Force ranked, for the most common situations.
You are learning at home, or accompanying your own singing. A standard, one piece, double reed harmonium. Do not buy a scale changer yet. Spend the money you saved on a better built instrument. This is the right answer for the large majority of first time buyers.
You lead kirtan, bhajan or satsang and you travel to do it. A folding harmonium, double reed. Portability is a genuine requirement and the small loss of sustain is worth it. Check the sustain carefully here, since folding models are where it matters most.
You play with other musicians or accompany different singers. A scale changer, from a maker with a reputation to protect. This is the one category where paying more is straightforwardly justified, because the mechanism is what you are paying for and a cheap one will fail.
You perform or record, and you want the fullest sound. Triple or quadruple reed, one piece. More banks, more voicing options, more body in the tone. Weight stops being a consideration when the instrument does not move.
You are buying for a child or a complete beginner who may not continue. A standard double reed model at the accessible end of the range. Avoid single reed, which sounds thin enough to put a beginner off the instrument entirely.

Living with your harmonium: the two repairs every owner should know
Read this part even if you are not buying from us. It is the part that saves people the most worry, and almost nobody selling harmoniums tells you any of it.
Two things will happen to your harmonium at some point. A note will start to buzz, sound weak, or stop sounding altogether. Or a key will begin to stick and hang on after you let go.
Neither is a defect. Neither means the instrument is failing. Both are one hundred per cent resolvable, both take a few minutes, and both are things you can do yourself with a screwdriver and a soft brush.
This is worth saying plainly because the alternative is what usually happens. An owner hears a buzz, assumes the instrument is ruined, stops playing it, and it goes under a bed. A harmonium is wood, metal, felt and air in a room that has dust in it and humidity that changes with the seasons. Over years, things settle and things drift. That is not a fault in the instrument. It is the instrument being made of real materials.
What you need. A small screwdriver, a soft brush, a blower or a can of air, a piece of fine sandpaper, and an ordinary business card. That is the entire toolkit.
REPAIR 1: A note that buzzes, sounds weak, or does not sound at all
What is actually wrong. Almost always something physical in or around that one reed. A speck of dust, a tiny metal particle, a fibre, or the reed tongue sitting very slightly off centre in its slot so that it catches as it vibrates.
It is not a tuning problem, and you must not treat it as one.
Step 1. Confirm it is one note. Play up and down the keyboard. If one note is affected, it is a reed. If a whole section has gone quiet or weak, it is not a reed, it is air or a stop, and you should stop and contact us instead.
Step 2. Open the instrument. Remove the screws holding the cover over the reed board. Put every screw in a bowl. Lift the cover off gently. It is not glued, so if it feels stuck, ease it, do not lever it hard.
Step 3. Find the right reed. The reeds are laid out in the same order as the keys on the front, so you can count across to the one you want. If the instrument has more than one bank, the same note appears in each bank, so check them all.
Step 4. Look along the slot. With good light, look at the gap between the reed tongue and the edges of the slot it sits in. Often the problem is visible straight away: a fibre, a hair, a speck sitting in the gap.
Step 5. Clean it. Brush gently along the reed. Use the blower to clear the slot. If something is lodged in the gap, slide the edge of a business card along the slot underneath the tongue to sweep it out.
Do not use oil, do not use any lubricant spray, and do not use cotton wool or anything else that sheds fibres. You are trying to remove material from the gap, not add it.
Step 6. Check the tongue sits straight. The tongue should sit centred in the slot with an even gap all the way round, and level with the plate or a hair above it. If it is leaning against one side of the slot it will buzz every time it vibrates. A very light nudge back to centre with a fingertip or the corner of the card is enough. Small movements. Check, do not force.
Step 7. Test before you close it up. Refit the cover loosely with a few screws, pump, and play the note. If it sounds clean, put the rest of the screws back.
Step 8. If it still will not sound, the reed can simply be replaced. A reed is held in place by two screws. Taking one out and putting a new one in is a five minute job, and it is worth keeping a spare set in the house. Message us and we will tell you which reed you need.
The one thing never to do. Do not file, scrape or sand the reed. That is tuning, it is skilled work, and it cannot be undone. Metal does not go back on.
REPAIR 2: A key that sticks, or a note that hangs on after you let go
What is actually wrong. One of two things, and they are easy to tell apart.
Either the key is rubbing against its neighbours at the sides, usually because the wood has taken up a little moisture and swollen. Or there is dust under the felt pad at the back of the key, so the pad no longer seals the air hole completely when the key comes up.
Step 1. Work out which one it is. Press the key and release it slowly, watching it.

- \1 That is the
seal at the back not closing. Dust.
Step 2, if it is friction at the sides.
First, wait. If several keys have gone stiff at the same time and the weather has just changed, that is the wood responding to humidity, and it will very often settle by itself in a few days. Sanding a key that is temporarily swollen leaves you with a loose, rattly key when it dries back out.
If one key alone is sticking, or it has not settled after a week:
Lift the key out. A Delhi style key is one piece and lifts off its centre pin. A Calcutta style key is two pieces, and the front section lifts out.
Take a piece of fine sandpaper and give the sides of the key a few light strokes. A few. You are removing a whisker of material, not reshaping it.
Wipe the dust off, refit the key, and test it. Repeat if it is still tight. It is always better to do this three times too lightly than once too hard.
Step 3, if it is the seal at the back.
Lift the back of the key and look underneath. You will see a small felt pad and the opening it covers when the key is at rest.
Brush and blow the dust out of the opening and off the pad. Check the felt is lying flat, and that it has not folded over or come loose at an edge. Refit the key.
Step 4. Test. Press and release. The sound should stop the instant you let go.
What to leave to a workshop
Not everything is a do it yourself job, and knowing where the line is protects the instrument.
Leave these to us or to a good local repairer:

Questions we get asked
Does a harmonium need tuning? Not often. It holds tuning far better than any stringed instrument. Over many years of heavy use individual reeds can drift and be adjusted, but this is not an instrument you tune before playing.
What is the difference between a harmonium and a shruti box? The harmonium has a keyboard and plays melody and chords. A shruti box has no keyboard and only holds a drone. The shruti box came out of the harmonium, and it exists because the music wanted a drone rather than chords.
Can I use a harmonium as a drone? Yes. Pull out the drone knobs, or hold a key down with something, and it will sit there like a shruti box.
Why do my drones not sound? Almost always because no main stop is open for the chamber the drones sit in. Open a stop and they appear.
Why does my tremolo stop go silent when I open another stop? Because air takes the easiest route. With another chamber open, air stops going past the tremolo flap. Nothing is wrong.
Is my harmonium supposed to crackle? Some do, from the glue and material in the bellows, and it does not wear off. It is worth checking before you buy rather than after.
One note sounds weak or buzzy. Is it ruined? No. This happens to every harmonium eventually and it is completely fixable. Almost always it is dust or a small particle in the reed, or a reed tongue sitting slightly off centre in its slot. You can clear it yourself in a few minutes with a screwdriver and a soft brush. If the reed itself needs replacing, that is two screws. Part 11 has the full step by step.
A key is not coming back up properly. Also normal, also fixable in minutes. Either the key is rubbing at the sides, usually because the wood has taken up moisture, or there is dust under the felt pad at the back where the key seals the air hole. Part 11 explains how to tell which one it is and what to do about each.
Do I need a repairer nearby to own a harmonium? No. The two things that actually go wrong over the years are both do it yourself jobs, set out in Part 11. Tuning, bellows work and mechanism repairs are workshop jobs, and those are rare. Send us a video of anything you are unsure about.
440 Hz or something else? 440 if you will ever play with others or along to recordings. If you only play alone, what matters is that the instrument is in tune with itself.
Delhi or Calcutta? A difference in key action and coupler design, not a difference in quality. Buy on sound.
Should I buy from a seller who holds stock in my own country? It sounds safer and it often is not. Stock held abroad usually got there by sea cargo, which means weeks in a container through changing temperature and humidity, time in a warehouse, and then a road journey, with a great deal more handling along the way. Wood moves and tuning drifts in those conditions. We send instruments directly from the workshop by express air freight instead, so the harmonium that arrives is close to the one that left the bench.
How long does shipping take? Usually about three to five days to most addresses worldwide, by FedEx express with special handling, direct from our workshop. Remote locations and customs clearance can add a little.
Can I see the actual instrument before I pay? Yes. We send video of the specific harmonium on WhatsApp, and payment is taken after you have seen it, not at checkout.
How long will it last? Properly built and reasonably looked after, decades. The parts that wear are the bellows material and, eventually, reed tuning, and both can be serviced.
