Choosing yours
A tanpuri is a shorter tanpura, usually around 30 to 36 inches. The drone is less full than a full size instrument but it is far easier to carry, store and keep in tune.
They suit instrumental practice, travel, and situations where a full tanpura is impractical. Many singers keep one for daily practice and a full instrument for performance.
Four strings is standard, tuned the same way as a full tanpura: the fifth, then the tonic in three octaves.
Tuning and setup
Strung and tuned before dispatch with the jawari set so each string sustains evenly. Expect to retune over the first days as the strings stretch.
The thread under the strings at the bridge creates the shimmer. If a string sounds thin, adjust the thread before touching the tuning.

What is the difference between a tanpuri and a tanpura?
Size. A tanpuri is shorter, with a less full drone but far easier to carry and store. The tuning and playing are the same.
