Choosing yours

The veena is the principal string instrument of Carnatic music, played seated with the instrument across the lap. A full Saraswati veena is large and heavy; mini veenas are made for practice and travel.

Frets are set in wax, which allows them to be adjusted, and the playing style uses heavy pulling across frets rather than moving between them.

Care and climate

The wax holding the frets softens in heat. Keep the instrument out of direct sun and away from radiators, or the frets will shift.

Questions we get asked

What is the difference between a Saraswati veena and a mini veena?

Size. A full veena is the concert instrument; mini veenas are lighter and shorter, made for practice and travel.

How are the frets fixed?

Set in wax, which lets them be adjusted. The wax softens in heat, so keep the instrument away from direct sun.

Is it used in Hindustani music?

Chiefly Carnatic. The Hindustani equivalents are the rudra veena and the vichitra veena, which are different instruments.
