What a kirtan harmonium needs
Three things. It folds, because it goes to satsang and back. It has a coupler, because you are accompanying voices and the coupler thickens the tone to hold a room. And it is 2 reed, because 3 reed is heavier to carry and louder than a kirtan needs. Every instrument on this page has all three.
The instruments
Maharaja Portable Kirtan Flight Model, $589. Built by us specifically because kirtan leaders kept asking for something that fits an overhead locker. 2 reed, folds small, cabin baggage. The lightest option here.
Bina No. 23B Deluxe, $789. Bina's small folding model. 2.5 octaves, which is enough for kirtan and chanting. Folds small, carries easily.
Bina No. 23B Kirtan, $895. A common kirtan choice. 2 reed, 3.5 octaves, coupler, folds. The extra octave over the Deluxe matters if you accompany a range of voices.
Maharaja Safri, $705 to $755. Our own folding kirtan harmonium, 9 stops with a coupler, and honestly the better instrument of the two for the same job at less money. If you are choosing between the Safri and the Bina 23B Kirtan, choose the Safri.
If you want a coupler at a lower price, the Maharaja 9 stop with coupler at $569 on our beginner page does not fold but has everything else. And if you want a fuller 9 stop sound that still folds, the Bina 17 series at $825 to $919 on our portable page is the step up.
Coupler, and why it matters here
A coupler sounds the same note an octave apart from a single key. For solo playing it is optional. For kirtan it is close to essential, because you are underneath a room of singers and the thickened tone is what holds them together. Every instrument on this page has one except the 23B Deluxe, which is why the Kirtan model exists.
Carrying it
All three fold. The $589 Flight Model and the 23B fit cabin baggage in a padded bag. Everything we ship is insured free for its full value, so the journey to you is covered. Once it is yours, a padded bag for the car and a hard case for any flight where it is checked.
